Född o. 1580 i Tyskland, död 1629 i Stockholm (Tyska förs.), där specif. verifikationer saknas 1618-35.
Tecknare, kopparstickare och träsnidare. Inkom till Sverige troligen 1616 och erhöll 1617 17/2 fullmakt att bo i landet utan 'borgerlig tunga och besvär'. Bosatt i Stockholms norra förstad 1621 enligt stadens tänkebok s. å. 23/11. Uppbar 1624 16 dlr smt för gravering å en prinsessas likkista. 1627 utstack han vapen och namn på prinsessan Agnes’ av Holstein-Gottorp kista i Riddarholmskyrkan för 40 dlr smt. Sistn. år 9/1 var »Fallenteen kåpparstijkare … stämbd at svara Adam Rickertz [då] Dee Laskepelles [De la Chapelle] löitnant, war icke till wedermåls» (Norra förstadens tänkeb.). I boskapsräkningen 1628 skattade »Pfallentijn kapperstik» i norra förstadens östra kvarter för ett »gammalt svijn». Kungen var synbarligen vid T:s frånfälle orolig för kvarlåtenskapen enligt Riks. reg. 1629 19/12: »Gustaff Adolph etc. Wår gunst etc. Effter dhet Wij förnumne at kopparstickaren på Norremalm är dödh och hoos honom äre allehanda kopparplåtar som medh stoor kostnadt utstukne äre, derföre på dhet dhe icke måge förkomma, sk...

An acclaimed astronomer, was born in Nuremburg in 1671. He was a member of the Royal Society of London and the Academies of Berlin, Vienna and St. Petersburg. He visited astronomers in many countries, and hence in addition to the star charts and selenographic map, the atlas includes “diagrams illustrating the planetary system of Copernicus, Tycho and Riccioli; the ecliptic theories of Kepler, Boulliau, Seth Ward and Mercator; the lunar theories of Tycho, Horrocks and Newton, and Halley’s cometary theory” (DSB).

First edition, folio (560 x 390mm), engraved allegorical additional titles (plain), title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, engraved index listing 30 subjects and 30 double-page engraved celestial charts and diagrams, some incorporating miniature world maps or spandrel illustrations of astronomical observatories, in contemporary hand colour and wash.
Doppelmayr, an acclaimed astronomer, was born in Nuremberg in 1671. He was a member of the Royal Society of London and the Academies of Berlin, Vienna and St. Petersburg.
It is not surprising that Dopplemayr collaborated with Germany’s leading map publisher Johann Baptist Homann on both the terrestrial and celestial maps included in this atlas. He visited astronomers in many countries and hence in addition to the star charts and selenographic map, the atlas includes “diagrams illustrating the planetary system of Copernicus, Tycho, and Riccilio; the ecliptic theories of Kepler, Bouliaeu, Seth Ward and Mercator; the lunar theories of Tycho, Horrocks and Newton, and Halley’s cometary theory” (DSB IV, p. 166).

ORTELIUS (ORTELS, WORTELS), ABRAHAM.
Biografiska uppgifter:1527-98. Född och död i Antwerpen.
Belgisk kartograf. Efter studier i grekiska, latin och matematik började han i 20-årsåldern som karthandlare. Först 1564 offentliggjorde han sitt första självständiga arbete, en världskarta på 8 blad (idag endast känt i ett exemplar). Ett antal mindre specialkartor utkom senare och 1570 lade han fram sitt främsta verk, 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' som betecknar en epok i kartografins historia. Det var den första systematiskt utarbetade kartsamlingen baserad på samtida forskningsresultat. Flera av den tidens främsta geografer var hans medarbetare. Första utgåvan av 'Theatrum' innehöll 70 kartor på 53 blad. Härtill kom under åren 1573-95, 5 supplement med totalt 108 kartor. Ortelius atlas trycktes redan första året i 4 utgåvor. Till 1612 utkom inte mindre än 43 folioutgåvor med text på 7 olika språk. Dessutom trycktes 31 utgåvor i förminskat format under åren 1576-1697. De historiska kartorna samlades i en egen atlas, 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Paregon; sive veteris Geographiae Tabulae' som även den kom i flera upplagor. - För kartografins historia har Ortelius bidragit med stora förtjänster genom 'Catalogus auctorum' som medföljde hans atlas. Här nämner han alla tidigare och samtida kartografer som har varit hans källor och redogör utförligt för deras arbeten. Detta register, som är en ovärderlig källa till kunskap om de gamla kartograferna, har bearbetats och utgetts av Leo Bagrow.
Flemish cartographer who lived and worked in Antwerp. Began his career as a map trader. His first independent work was produced in 1564 and in 1570 came his chef-d'oeuvre, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first systematic collection of maps based on contemporary maps, re-engraved to fit a standard format. For almost 50 years, it was one of the most widely used atlases.

1570 Theatrum Orbis Terrarum 1570-1612 Between these years the Theatrum was re-issued in 42 editions with 5 supplements with text in Latin, Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Italian and English. The English edition was published in 1606 by John Norton, the maps being printed in Antwerp and the text added in London. Three years after Ortelius died in 1598, his heirs transferred publication rights to Jan Baptiste Vrients who produced the later editions until he died in 1612

1579-1606 Parergon Theatri The number of maps included in the Parergon increased from 4 in 1579 to 43 in 1606 with text in Latin, French, Italian, German and English (1606) 1624 Re-issued in Antwerp as a separate publication by Balthasar Moretus. This edition included a reproduction of the Peutinger table.
