Copper engraved and handcoloured map with original colours.
The cartouche with the imprint bear marks of an earlier imprint by Blaeu, probably Joan Blaeu. Historians believe the plate to have been engraved in 1672, although some argue that the erased signature belongs to G. [Willem] Blaeu, deceased 1638.
The map was however never published by the Blaeu printing house, probably because of the devastating fire 1672 that destroyed much of the printing house and stock. The plate was later sold to Gerard Valck. After erasing the contents of the shield and the imprint in the cartouche, replacing it with his own name, Valck published the map as his own in 1695.
The map itself is composed of two hemispheres centred over the poles. The rest of the frame is filled with ornaments and pictorials. In the top left the sun surrounded with clouds, top center there is a armillary sphere / spherical astrolabe surrounded by stars, and in the top right corner the moon also surrounded with clouds.
Below the hemispheres in the right and left corner we find the garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. The right corner depicts Adam clothed in a sunny garden of Eden surrounded by animals. The left corner depicts Adam and Eve, naked in a deserted landscape under heavy rain, probably after they have been expelled from the garden of Eden. In between those two scenes we find the cartouche and a empty shield.

Repairs to the center fold. Mounted in non-acid passepartout.
The map shows California as an island; the only Blaeu map to depict this cartographic myth. In the Pacific, the coastline of Australia is beginning take shape. In South America, the mythical Parime Lacus is shown on the Equator, and the southern tip of the continent is oddly truncated due to the projection.

Kartan visar nordpolen med polcirkeln och områdena omkring. På amerikanska sidan ända ner till och med Newfoundland och Hudson Bay. Hela Island är utmärkt på kartan samt stor del av Grönland, del av Svalbard och Novaja Zemljas norra och västra kust. Hela Europas och Asiens norra kust är utritad med städer såsom Trondheim och Archangelsk. Intressant är att Bottenviken är nämnd vid namn men ingen kustlinje är utritad.

Known by the Dutch as the 'golden devil', on account of her all black and gold appearance, 'Sovereign of the Seas' was the most magnificent ship of her era. Designed in 1634 by Phineas Pett she was the first ship to have three full gun decks, carrying 102 guns on the orders of King Charles I instead of the 90 originally planned. No expense was spared in her construction. All her guns were made from bronze instead of cast iron which meant they were much lighter but four times more expensive. Most impressive was her gilded and carved decoration costing over 6600 pound, equivalent to the cost of the hull for a two decked ship. Sovereign of the Seas was so large that two smaller ships were built from her waste timbers. The construction of 'Sovereign of the Seas' was part of Charles I's plan to overawe possible enemies, including the Dutch and Spanish, with England's naval power. Entering service in 1638 she did not go into battle before the English Civil War intervened in 1642. Laid up by Parliament during the Civil War, her first engagement was the Battle of Kentish Knock during the First Dutch War on 28 September 1652 when it is alleged she destroyed a Dutch ship with a single broadside. Renamed the 'Royal Sovereign' when Charles II came to the throne in 1660 she fought in several battles during the Second and Third Dutch Wars 1666-1673. The Nine Years War against France broke out in 1689 and 'Royal Sovereign' was present at the Battles of Beachy Head in 1690 and Barfleur in 1692 when the Royal Navy fought alongside the Dutch. Her career came to an abrupt end when she accidentally caught fire at Chatham on 27 January 1696.

En magnifik bild på ett magnifikt fartyg där koloreringen bokstavligt talat lyser. Figurerna som ses överallt på skeppet är inte de livlösa statisterna man ibland ser på äldre bilder utan verkliga aktörer som sliter med skeppets rigg och utrustning vilket ger bilden liv och rörelse.
